A Drop of Water

Two-Screen Video,4 min 39 secs

2017/18

The work inspired by the works of several artists.

In the Hidden Lives (1999) of Cathy Lane, some poems from female poets are cited, such as the poems from The Book of Hints and Wrinkles; through spatial sound, whispers and breathes light as memory, then shifting to the state of acceleration, then repeating routine-like incantations and orders, this work demonstrates how women shape and classify cabinets, living rooms, various residences and social life.

Sometimes, women are confined inside of the house, doing exhaustive household "bondage". At the same time, they would colonize their "inside", and the

house then could be their places for daydreaming at the same time.

The Emotional Orchestra (2005) of Marina Rosenfeld. In the way of electro-acoustic string orchestra, this work played the new works of about 40 female players. The whole orchestra was made up of female players. This work not only pursued tunes in music but also demonstrated sounds of deeper meanings through continuous dissonant chords.

Eyes Wide Open (2002), the work of Ann Lislegaard, used different loudspeakers in the same space to describe the performers' behaviours with female sounds. It integrated the close-up shots of female faces and bodies with coherent full-length shots, and projected equal-size frames to the walls, enabling the walls of gallery to “produce ”sound. This work fully demonstrated the relationship between space and female identity with fitful sound and wide-open eyes, flirtatious signals, integration of female voices and projections.

A Drop of Water responded the HerNoise Archive ( HerNoise Archive is a resource of collected materials investigating music and sound histories in relation to gender bringing together a wide network of women artists who use sound as a medium.)

Artist explored three questions in the work

I.The relationship between female's self-cognition and identity?

II. What is the relationship between the female's intrinsic self-awareness and extrinsic cognition?

III.Could female power only be elucidated by the female?

The work is divided into three sections to demonstrate the female power with self-awareness through the sound element of water, vocal and harp.
